The Utah State Historical Society has an index to its collection of Utah telephone directories. It lists just over 500 Utah cities, showing the phonebooks serving each city. As a result, each phonebook is listed many times. I created this page by extracting from the index only the unique telephone books in the collection. The range of years on each line of the table below spans the years in the collection. There may not have been a telephone book for every year in the range, but probably most of the years were in fact covered.

The great majority of the state was served by the Bell System. The local operating company was Rocky Mountain Bell Telephone Company (RMB) until 1911, when it merged with two other companies to form Mountain States Telephone and Telegraph Company (MST). About 1970, the company began identifying itself as Mountain Bell (MTB) on telephone book covers. In 1984, with the divestiture of AT&T, US West (USW) became the successor to Mountain States.

Telephone books covering the same general area are grouped together. Generally, phone books from private publishers follow the phone books for the same area that are published by the telephone company. When the telephone book name doesn't show its location, I have inserted the location in brackets.

The publishers of the telephone books are represented by these abbreviations.
